PSHE Lead : Miss Wright & Miss Pollock
St Joseph’s School has a strong commitment to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all pupils. The school vision and values, put together by all the staff, supports spiritual, moral, social and cultural characteristics in all pupils.
In our school pupils’ PSHE development can be seen for example, in:
- Understanding what and how important our British Values are.
- Taking part in a range of activities regarding social skills
- Developing an awareness and respect for diversity
- Developing and appreciation of theatre, music and the arts.
- Developing an understanding of right and wrong.
- Developing the communication skills to make choices about likes/dislikes in school then in wider community visits.
- Taking part in sporting opportunities.
- Taking part in cultural opportunities.
- Taking part in artistic opportunities.
PSHE is embedded throughout the curriculum at St Joseph’s. This integrated approach ensures that aspects of PSHE are considered in all subject areas.
Delivery of the Curriculum
We have a comprehensive scheme of work called ‘Life to the Full’ which is delivered each week. Please use the link below to see the long term overview.
Intent:
At St. Joseph’s Primary School, personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.
Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. As a result of this they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
Implementation:
We teach PSHE at St Joseph’s through the ‘Life to the Full’, scheme. During weekly whole class lessons will focus on different topics each term. Children are encouraged to use the skills they are developing and to make links to other areas of learning wherever possible. The aims of PSHE within our school are to provide children with accurate and relevant knowledge, opportunities to create personal understanding, opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities and a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life.
Whole school and key stage assemblies will also deliver teaching in many areas of the PSHE curriculum. The RE Curriculum and our Catholic life also provides opportunities for learning and development in PSHE.
Beyond the Curriculum
We are also committed as a school to our enrichment experiences. This is done through:
- Skills Builder Programme
- My Happy Mind Programme
- Arts, Music and Cultural Specialists
- Assemblies give pupils an opportunity to explore aspects of SMSC such as NSPCC, Red Cross, Fire Fighters programme and nurse.
We also use enrichment activities such as visitors and experiences to further enhance our PSHE curriculum.
