Our vision for learning French at St Joseph’s is to provide a high-quality and engaging curriculum for all children in Key Stage 2, enabling them to learn to communicate effectively in another language as well as understanding people from another culture.
The aims of the Curriculum for Modern Languages for Key Stage Two are to:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic
sources - speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of
communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking
questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation - write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of
grammatical structures that they have learnt - discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
The subject content for Modern Languages (French) is:
Key Stage Two

Implementation:
In order to achieve the above, we follow a specific Curriculum for Modern Languages (French).
Children develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. They start to record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.
Key words are displayed in the class and and French vocabulary is visible throughout the school. Practical activities, songs and games are used to help improve memory and recall and visual prompts are used to support children in translating new vocabulary.
Informal assessment of progress will be made by the teacher during lessons, through questioning and oral feedback.
Impact:
Pupils develop key language learning skills, as set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures. These are as follows:
